Drop in gasoline prices will help avoid summer run on small cars, hybrids Small cars and hybrids in short supply in current market There are just 10 days of supply of Toyota Prius hybrid; 30 day supply of all small cars Wider availability of credit, new-car inventory rebuilding in July will result in sales increase Consumers need to replace many record-old vehicles currently on the road Lower gas prices over summer months will provide car shoppers w/ more spendable income Instill confidence to buy vehicles that meets household needs Lower gas prices could lead to increased sales of larger cars, light trucks Overall shortage of new-car inventory created some pent up demand in May and June Pent up demand will boost auto sales over late summer and into fall selling season "Lower gasoline prices, wider availability of credit and new-car inventory rebuilding in July will result in a new-vehicle sales increase during the second half of the year as consumers replace many record-old vehicles currently on the road." -- Paul Taylor, chief economist, National Automobile Dealers Association
