All UK charities can receive donations through text messages without big costs, thanks to Vodafone and JustGiving Published on May 9, 2011
A collaboration between JustGiving and Vodafone means any charity in the UK can receive donations via a text message.
Previously only available to larger entities like Comic Relief, JustTextGiving has been dubbed the "new age of giving" by Cancer Research UK as it means costs for message donation services are now much lower, allowing smaller charities to get involved.
The initiative will allow any of 184,000 charities registered in the UK to receive donations via the medium of text, without suppliers taking any commission.
Natasha Hill told the Telegraph, "We believe the use of mobile devices for charitable giving has the potential to tap into a new demographic and create a new age of giving."
Anne-Marie Huby, Managing Director of JustGiving, says, “The future success of the charitable sector depends on making giving relevant for the next generation of donors and fundraisers – with mobiles a pocket essential, the ability to harness the power of a simple text is game-changing for the country’s charities.
"Major events like Comic Relief and Children in Need have led the way in demonstrating the potential of text giving."
According to a survey, only 44 per cent of 18-24 year olds donate, compared with 80 per cent of over 65 year olds. The hope is text message donations will see younger, more mobile-savvy audiences giving more.
Vodafone is expected to donate 5 million into the scheme.
Charities will be able to select their own 6-digit SMS code to start receiving donations, up to a maximum of £10, from today. Individuals will need to wait until June.
Check out your favoured charity's website to find its code.
