RIM has revealed some exclusive details regarding its up-and-coming QNX-powered smartphones Published on May 5, 2011

RIM smartphone future lies on its QNX platform. Everybody knows this. But today some previously unheard details about the transition and what the QNX-powered smartphones will entail has been unveiled by RIM.

Speaking exclusively to Tech-Radar, Carlo Chiarello, VP of GSM/UMTS business unit at RIM, spilled some proverbial beans on the new future platform of RIM’s BlackBerry smartphones.

According to Chiarello, ‘I can tell you that it's going to come in to the higher tier value propositions first. It'll probably come into an all-touch first, more than likely… but I can't tell you timings specifically. But it looks marvellous!’

He added that the QNX experience is going to ‘start to come in to our high tier products.’

Unfortunately, Chiarello was predictably tight-lipped about when we can expect to see some working QNX BlackBerry smartphones, saying: ‘I can't tell you when; I'm not allowed to. But it's absolutely part and parcel of what we're working on now.’

So, looks like we’ve got some new dual-core QNX-powered all-touch BlackBerry handsets to look forward to in the coming months.

Of course, if RIM takes too long getting these phones to market they may be overshadowed by the current crop of superphones that are doing the rounds.

Nevertheless, RIM isn’t a company that likes to rush things. If we had to hazard a guess, we’d say the devices will probably land in Q2 of 2012 at the very latest.

Obviously, a 2011 release would be even better but we’re not convinced RIM will be able to do this – it took the company the best part of a year to get the PlayBook to market.

More news as we get it.
