Apple’s iOS 5, which is set to debut on the iPhone 5, is reported to be the first iteration of Apple’s mobile platform to feature Over The Air (OTA) updates Published on May 5, 2011

WWDC 2011 is fast approaching, as is the iPhone 5 release date, and the rumour mill is in full swing today with reports that Apple’s iOS 5 will feature OTA updates, which means no more plugging into iTunes to get the goods.

The news comes via 9to5Mac who reports that ‘Apple is negotiating with Verizon about delivering over-the-air iOS updates starting with iOS 5.’

Granted, Verizon is a US network but once the feature is in place it’s only a matter of time before UK-based networks begin following suit.

If true, this is great news, as no one likes plugging into a PC to update the software on their phone, especially since wireless communication between devices is now commonplace in our modern technology-filled world.

However, one important thing to note is that ‘iOS 5 will not come over-the-air but following point updates to it will,’ says Mac-Rumors.

So we’re not likely to see any OTA iOS updates until iOS 5.1.

So why is Apple talking to networks about this? Simple: rolling out large updates like iOS 5.1, for instance, are pretty data intensive. Yes, Android does it but Apple will still have to go through the motions with networks before it can OTA its updates.

Apple TV also does OTA updates, which means Apple does have the technology, it’s now just a case of dotting the I’s and crossing the t’s with the networks.

Lets juts hope Apple is already in talks with UK-based networks as well.
