Google has signed a deal with its partners to offer Android updates faster to devices Published on May 10, 2011
Google has vowed to bring Android updates to phones faster, in partnership with the major manufacturers and networks.
The company is working with major manufacturers and networks to bring updates to devices as soon as they are announced.
Partners include HTC, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, AT&T, Sprint and Verizon.
Manufacturers and UK operators are notoriously slow to roll out firmware updates to devices, so maybe this will change when Google signs similar deals with UK networks.
The deal means firmware updates will be available pretty soon after announcement and will be available for much longer after they are announced, up to 18 months.
Previously, updates were only available until the next firmware update was released.
So lets hope that means we can get Ice Cream Sandwich straight away!
Any Motorola Xoom 4G users can upgrade their devices to Android 3.1 from today. Shame we still have to wait for the tablet to become available here.
Google is yet to announce any UK partners, although we assume the major carriers such as T-Mobile, Orange, Vodafone and O2 will all come onboard and suport you getting the latest Android OS as soon as it becomes available.
